-The tiger (Panthera tigris) is the largest extant cat species, most recognisable for its dark vertical stripes on orange fur.

-White tigers, with brown stripes, roamed India's wilds until 1958. Their coloring comes for a small change in a gene called SLC45A2.

-Rare golden tigers sport blond fur and reddish-brown stripes. The color is traced to a mutation in a gene called CORIN.

-Snow tigers wear only a hint of pale brown stripes, due to mutations in both SLC45A2 and CORIN.

-Pseudomelanistic tigers are orange, but with much broader black stripes. Suspected mutation in the gene TAQPEP, which causes tabby stripes to bleed together in housecats.
